Iceland – October 2016

Iceland Itinerary – October 2016

Photos of Iceland

Iceland is an incredibly beautiful country. The landscapes are dramatic. The volcanoes, the waterfalls, the fjords and the glaciers are awe-inspiring.

We visited Iceland for 10 days and that included a self-drive tour on the Ring Road (Route 1), the main road that runs around the entire island.

We had one day in Reykjavik (Iceland’s capital) at the beginning of our trip and one day at the end of our trip, so just 8 days on the Ring Road, stopping one night in each place. It was a little rushed at times, however in October it is cold and wet – not conducive for walking.

Also, in October the mountain roads are closed so we did not need a 4×4 vehicle, as we did not venture off the Ring Road. We rented a Town & Country vehicle on arrival in Iceland through Iceland 4×4 Car Rental – located near Keflavik International Airport, about a 40-minute drive from Reyjavik.

Cairns

Fly Qantas from Sydney to Cairns and collect a Britz 4WD with rooftop tent – a very well equipped vehicle. We drive to Port Douglas via Palm Cove.

New Zealand North Island

Auckland – Hobbiton – Rotorua – Ohope – East Cape – Gisborne – Napier – Hastings – Hawkes Bay – Greytown – Wellington – Tongariro National Park – Taupo – Whangarei & Tutukaka Coast – Russell – Paihia – Kerikeri – Cape Reinga – Opononi – Waipoua Forest – Auckland

Having enjoyed a road trip through the South Island of New Zealand in Dec-Jan 2014-5, we decided to go back and see the North Island in Dec-Jan 2015-16.

While not having quite the ‘wow’ factor of the South Island, the North Island has a different feel and plenty of spectacular places to visit – we loved it. Highlights include the thermal activity around Rotorua, Northland & Bay of Islands, the Hawkes Bay region, the iconic Pacific Coast Drive (State Highway 35), Wellington and Auckland.

Longreach, Queensland

Stockman Hall of Fame LongreachThere is much to see and do in Longreach. It’s a long drive to get there but if you have the time it’s worth spending a few days – the region has a lot to offer.

Longreach is located in Central Western Queensland. It is sheep and cattle country – and tourism increasingly plays an important role in the town’s prosperity. The most well known attractions are the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and the Qantas Founders Museum, however we found there is much more to Longreach than that if you are visiting during the tourist season.

The tourist season is from April through to October so it’s best to plan your visit during that time, when most of the evening entertainment and tours are on.

Carnarvon Gorge, Queensland

Carnarvon Gorge Walk

Carnarvon Gorge Walk

Carnarvon Gorge is a spectacular place to visit in Queensland.

The Gorge is located in Central Queensland’s Highland Country, in what is called the Sandstone Belt. It is quite remote, about midway between Emerald and Roma (about a 3.5 hour drive from each town).

For us it was an ideal stopover on a road trip from Goondiwindi to Longreach – a place to spend a day to walk and experience the beauty of the gorge – steep sandstone cliffs, lush vegetation and Aboriginal rock art.

Wildflowers in Namaqua National Park

Wildflowers in Namaqua National Park

The wildflower season on the West Coast of South Africa runs from August through to September. This year (2015) has been reported as the best year to see the flowers since 2007 so no time like the present to catch this amazing natural wonder.

We had a rental car and were looking forward to a 6-day road trip to the West Coast, Northern Cape, North West Province, and finally Johannesburg.

Eating Out in Knysna, South Africa

Knysna is a popular destination in South Africa. Located on the scenic Garden Route on the south-eastern coast between Mossel Bay and Storms River, Knysna is an ideal stopover when exploring the Western Cape.

Knysna is about a five-hour drive east of Cape Town and has much to offer – beautiful scenery, beaches and forests as well as unique attractions including Knysna Elephant Park, Garden of Eden, Monkey Land – just to name a few. Knysna offers plenty of excellent accommodation and a host of wonderful restaurants.

Eating out is part of the fun on holidays but can sometimes be a hit and miss affair. On a recent trip to Knysna we discovered some new places to eat and some local favourites.

New Zealand South Island Slide Show 2014/15 – Google Photos

New Zealand’s South Island certainly has the ‘Wow’ factor. The beauty of the island is spectacular – lakes, mountains, rolling green hills and the coast.  It’s the kind of scenic landscape you see on calendars.

New Zealand is the perfect place for a road trip holiday with relatively short distances, plenty of good accommodation, excellent camping facilities and last, but not least, good food and wine.
