Sri Lanka is an island of contrasts – ancient ruins, bustling market towns, tea plantations, wildlife,  mist covered mountains and a beautiful coastline.

Travelling through Sri Lanka is a wonderful experience enhanced by the exceptional hospitality of the local people and the delicious food!

For our 2-week trip in Sri Lanka we fly into Colombo, then drive up to the Cultural Triangle to see ruins of ancient monastries, temples and palaces (Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla), drive down through the tea plantations (Kandy, Nuwera Eliya, Ella) and finally to the South Coast (Thalpe, Unawatuna, Galle Fort), before flying out of Colombo.

Four Days in Bangkok – October 2017

Chao Phraya River Bangkok

Chao Phraya River Bangkok

Bangkok was a perfect stopover on a recent trip from Sydney to Sri Lanka, flying Thai Airlines. We stayed for four fantastic days – highly recommended.

Day 1 – Bangkok

Breakfast at Oriental Hotel
We began our first day with a treat – breakfast on the terrace of the beautiful Oriental Hotel, overlooking the Chao Phraya River. Not only was the food delicious, it was a great place to watch life on the river.

Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)
From the Oriental Hotel we caught a ferry to the beautiful Wat Arun temple. Located on the west bank of the river, it is a relatively small temple precinct. The steep spire is decorated with colourful pieces of porcelain and glass. We were able to climb the spire and were rewarded with lovely views. The Ordination Hall is also worth a visit.

Vietnam: Hanoi – Sapa – Halong Bay – Hoi An – Nha Trang – Ho Chi Minh City

Vietnam

Vietnam

We can highly recommend a trip to Vietnam.

Our family and friends travelled to Vietnam in April 2005 and our itinerary has been used by many people since.

Vietnam itself is a very safe, clean country and is incredibly cheap. Our 17 day trip cost approximately $2,000 per person which included airfares, accommodation and some meals, some transfers, guides/train trip to Sapa, Halong Bay junk. Meals were very cheap – US$2 bought a good meal.

We flew with Vietnam Airlines – we found them to be excellent. We generally chose to stay at 3 star hotels and found them clean and comfortable. Many included breakfast. (more…)
